A Hand Therapist can be either an Occupational Therapist (OT) or a Physical Therapist (PT) who specializes in providing rehabilitative care for patients with hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder problems, collectively referred to as the upper extremity. Their specialized skills encompass both assessment and treatment, including splinting, strengthening and wound care.
All of NW Hand's therapists are Hand Therapists. Becoming a Hand Therapist requires considerable advanced study beyond the primary OT and PT level. Many Hand Therapists continue their training even further to become Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs). To become a CHT, a Hand Therapist is required to have a minimum of five years clinical experience, at least 4,000 hours of care dedicated to the practice of Hand Therapy, and must pass a comprehensive certification exam, with recertification required every 5 years.
Your first appointment will is approximately one hour in length. A hand Therapist will review your history, take measurements and assess the function of your hand and upper extremity. Your Therapist will develop a care plan personalized to your specific needs, including goals of treatment and your treatment plan. You will likely be instructed in an individualized home therapy exercise program to maximize your recovery.
You may need a splint to immobilize your hand or upper extremity. The splint may be custom made from a thermoplastic material which molds to your hand or arm when heated with hot water. The splint is secured in place with Velcro straps and is removable. You may be fitted with a pre-fabricated splint if a custom splint is not required for your condition.
Custom-made splints often require minor modifications after the initial fitting. If your splint needs adjustment, please don't hesitate to call.
